What Are the 4Cs?
The 4Cs—Color, Clarity, Cut, and Carat Weight—were developed by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and are now the universal standard for evaluating diamonds.
1. Color: The Absence of Hue
Diamonds are graded on a scale from D (colorless) to Z (noticeable yellow or brown tint). Most Chrysella clients prefer near-colorless stones (G–H) for their balanced beauty and value.
- D–F: Colorless
- G–J: Near-colorless (often indistinguishable once set)
- K–Z: Warm tones, ideal for vintage styles or yellow gold settings
2. Clarity: Flawless to Naturally Unique
Clarity assesses internal inclusions and surface blemishes. Most are invisible without magnification.
- FL–IF: Flawless to Internally Flawless
- VVS1–VVS2: Very, Very Slight Inclusions
- VS1–VS2: Very Slight Inclusions (typically eye-clean)
- SI1–SI2: Slight Inclusions (often still eye-clean)
- I1–I3: Included (visible imperfections)

3. Cut: The Sparkle Factor
Cut determines how brilliantly a diamond reflects light. A superb cut can make a smaller stone outperform a larger one.
- Excellent: Ideal proportions and brilliance
- Very Good: Beautiful light return with slight imperfections
- Good/Fair: Less sparkle, reduced brilliance
Chrysella prioritizes cut quality over any other C for good reason.
4. Carat: Weight, Not Just Size
Carat measures weight, but perceived size can vary by shape and cut. For example, an oval may appear larger than a round of the same carat.
